Urban Playground: Where Street Food Meets Soul in Maitland

urban-playground-staff-2025

Nestled in Maitland, Cape Town, Urban Playground is more than just a restaurant – it’s an edible adventure grounded in community, creativity, and bold flavours.

Birthed from the same vision as the Sense of Taste Chef School, the Ayub family transformed a vacant space into a culinary workshop-meets-diner. Upstairs, students refine their craft; downstairs, they take their talents to the plate.
Expect global street-food re-imagined: masala steak rubs shoulders with Polish kielbasa, vindaloo bunny chow mingles with wood-fired pizzas, and even escargot ravioli and eisbein make cameos.

With street art, a skateboard aesthetic, and a kitchen made visible to diners, Urban Playground pulses with energy. Reviewers rave that the vibe is “phenomenal” — chefs chatting, laughter, music, and a sense that you’re part of the show.

Urban Playground’s mission extends beyond great food. Together with its chef school, it runs a feeding programme supplying 600 to 800 meals weekly, and offers internships for youth in the local area. All take-away packaging is eco-friendly, and operations are designed to minimize waste — nose-to-tail, sustainable, seasonal.
